Hey Sytse nice to hear from you. We stand by everything we wrote :) We can only be so harsh with architects because we like them so much. We love egomaniac anti-heros architects, especially if they drink lots of coffee and they are chain smokers.

It is a real pity that the author of this posting is generalizing so terribly. Apparently on every mishap in the urban world it is the architects to blame. May I remind the author that many architects do wonderful jobs in helping people develop their habitat and supporting participatory design? May I remind the author that many architects join events like Urban Typhoon?

If it is the author's aim to promote a more sensible and sensitive development of the urban environment, it would help to involve and inspire people, including architects. Portraying architects as wrong doers by default is counterproductive.

I found it rather insulting to read the following quotes from your text.

"architects are narcissistic egomaniacs dreaming of reshaping the world in their own individual and idealized self-image"

"Architects usually think of themselves as mighty creators, producing context rather than responding to it. [...] Architects typically have to destroy whatever is on the ground before their own venture can start."

"Architects are nearly never able to resolve their internal conflicts between artistic creation, building actualization, economic success and social recognition."

"Sleepless nights, heavy consumption of coffee and cigarettes, hours in front of the computer screen, loneliness and seclusion from the family, and miserable paychecks are the common lot of architects around the world."

"That's why architects make good mercenaries, working in the service of rich clients, and also being intense critical theorists. However, they rarely become fighters in their own names. Or even in the names of other causes."
